I have two Okuma 55s, and 45lb test howies copper. I tried the knot that bill bale and dave engle showed at the GR fishing show, the albright knot and that wont pass through the line guide with 30lb or 40 lb test berkley big game. i also tried the howie knot with both lines the 30lb test goes though ok but still sticks the 40 i can force through. The way i have the reels set up is 300yds 50lb spider wire, then mono, then copper, then leader. The middle mono is to hook to the boards. Anyone have any better ideas how to set this up so the knot passes through the line guide?

edit:
the leader is 20lb flourocarbon.

i have also had a problem with the copper breaking right at the knot in the copper. Am i tying the copper to tight?

I use 25 lb Big Game backing & 45 lb Howie's copper with an albright knot and also have trouble with my Convector level winds on occasion. The knot will go through but I sometimes have to push the knot to the bottom of the levelwind where the slot is bigger. Not the best scenario when you have a fish on.

I saw a post (I think on another site) where someone used a Dremel tool to make the opening in the levelwind a bit bigger. I might give that a shot.

i run 25 lb berkley big game and 45lb howies copper line and i did the albright knot and said goodbye to my first fish and all that copper. since i see you are out of port sheldon you need to do what i did and take it to the gal that runs gold coast outfitters right there by pidgeon lake. i had her replace my copper and tye the knots and i caught more fish off of that rig than anything else all year and she guaranteed me that her knot would not break and so far so good , tons of fish on that rig. wish i could tell you a better knot but i will go to them for that knot from now on.. tom

Money pit thanks for the info. I had an old line guide from okuma that i tried to grind out woth a dremel tool, i don't think i will be doing that on my good reels. That is some tough metal and finish.

Thomas i am going to try and call goldcoast. i deal with them a lot. Did you happen to see how she tied the knot? was it an overhand in the copper and like a snell in the mono if you did see it?

if anyone else has any more ideas i am open to suggestions.

sorry i didn't get back right away, i did not see how she did it but it was quick and a great knot and it fit through the guides just great. yea like you i do a lot of my business there they seem very helpful. i am sure they would be happy to do it for you. she was the only one there that would do it the other guy said she was the best and ive got to say she knows her stuff.i have received a lot of good advice from there and given them some good fishing reports when i return so they can pass them on. good luck tom

I went there tonight and Michelle the owner came down and showed me how to tie it up. I do most of my business there because of the customer service, even though it is a ride from jenison. Also there prices beat anyone in the grand rapids and grandville area on most items i use. Did you get there for the open house on march 1? they had some great deals.
