SO i have been watching Deadliest catch all day and on the windshields of the boats they have electric defoggers that tape to the windows like on the backs of most cars. I went on to the chat on discovery adn got an answer back from one of the guys on the ships. He said witou them there windows would be constantly frozen up.

So my thoughts on this is will it work on a salmon boat with a rag top. And where i might be able to get one if you guys think it might work. I hate morning dew and if this waould work i want to try it. I have been doing some searching on the net but have not come up with anything yet.

So if anyone has any ideas let me here them. I have already tried the little ceramic heaters that they sell to no avail.any ideas????????

You might be able to get freezer door heaters. It's the heated wire that runs around the door to keep it from freezin up. But I really don't know where you can get them.

These things draw a massive amount of electricity

You used to be able to buy them from JC Whitney car catalog . I had put one on a old VW beetle i had years ago actually worked well

that was the only thing i was concerned about was the draw. I do have two 31 class deep cycle batts and a strong alternator on board to run downriggers and other electronics. Do you think it would be to great while starting and running in the morning. after we got to the fishing spot i would turn it off as it really isnt needed much then?

Have to do the math
Usually recharging the battery after a morning start uses about 50% of charging out put the restore battery condition for about 30 minutes on average
Then a additional 15% to keep motor running
Obviously you would have to add lights and electronics to this load when you add it all up you will be surprised how much potential load there is there
Way too many variables including engine speed vs out put of alternator

At the end of the day a accurate volt meter on the dash can keep you in constant touch with what’s happening with the charging system. Any thing under 13 volts when running you are using more than you are putting out

Also with the additional loads you will need to tighten and change an alternator belt a lot more often

We have a rag top and use a ceramic heater - it works great! There are still times where we get some fogging up but that is way down with the use of the heater. We plug it in at night, close the canvas up tight and we are good to go in the morning.
