Today was the first day fishing for LD this season. We (BFG, Roamer & I) set lines at 13:30 and eventually managed our 3 man limit. Final fish came in as a double (threw one back) at 18:35. First hour nothing, next few hours we had a steady slow pick going. Last hour we took 8. We had 3 fish in the 5-6# range and our big fish was 7.5. We were pulling Husky Jerks and Wally Divers 55' & 60' off the tow lines. We were fishing parallel to shore between Fermi & Stoney Pt. in 18-22 FOW. They wanted it fast, we were fishing 2.0-2.5 knots on the GPS. If today was any indication, it's going to be a GREAT year on Erie.

Alright guys! Sorry I had to miss. Family day! It's been real spotty and downright slow at times on the Detroit river. Very hit and miss. Glad to hear there out on the lake. I had heard they were getting them on crankbaits near and in Brest bay. Any 2004 or 2005 fish? They haven't been showing up much at all. They should be great eaters in the 19 inch range for the 2004 fish and 15 - 16 inch for the 2005 fish. The 2003 fish should be 4 - 5 lbs. by the end of summer. They have coming in at 3 - 4 lbs. Can't wait to get out on the lake and leave that awful jigging behind!

19" 1x (smallest today-remember when that was a hawg?) 20" 3x 21" 1x 22" 5x
The rest were much longer than the cooler's 20" scale, probably in the 27-28" range per the onboard estimates at the time. The weights above were by digtal scale.

I was out for a quick test drive for my new planer board mast and I heard Little Dandy was out in front of Fermi. I gave the dumping grounds a try. I made one pass up wind (1.8 mph) and one down wind (2.5 mph) and ended up with two on the up wind troll using reef runners back 50 ft. Only trolled for 30 - 40 minutes. Can't wait to hit it again for real.

We caught fish going up and downwind, but for sure the nearshore side of the boat did most of the damage depending on which direction we were trolling. Once Mike had 3-4 waypoints to go from..it was game on.
Coulda used ya' out there Steve...the way the last hour went, it would've taken about 20 minutes to get your five!
Have to throw out some kudos to Mike as well. The tackle/rigging upgrades over the winter are VERY NICE indeed. I think we finally got Hal cured from throwing brand new OR-10's overboard...
BTW...hats off to the guys at Mathew's Bait and Tackle. Mike stopped in to pick up some things there the other day and the guys told him which Husky Jerks had been working good for them. Several of the fish INHALED the lure...in fact, the one fish only had about 1.5" of body and the lip sticking out of its mouth.
WHAMMO!
Thanks boys...

Here's a couple of the better ones for the day.....and remember, ALL fish look smaller in my hands..
Truly a cooler full of pigs, but Hal and Mike also took theirs with them, so the full effect doesn't quite get it...but I had some serious cutting to do last night with those fish and some iced fish from Friday/Saturday from the river....of course the smaller ones are from the river...LOL
Anyone hungry yet??? LMAO!!!!!!

It's a shame we didn't have a camera on board. That was the best cooler of walleye I've ever been a part of. Would have loved a picture of them spread across the cockpit deck of LD.

Awesome photos Clark!!!! Hey you sent me a couple of emails and I added the address to my book. I know it's a work email. I won't send any junk - just serious fish stuff like when we're going and stuff. Send me your home if you like. I won't send any junk there either. I'll send my work one to you when I get a chance.
Corey - Hope to meet you this year. Little Dandy's talked a lot about you! I've known him since childhood. We don't always agree but they don't get any better than him!!! Glad there's some smaller fish showing up! there hasn't been anything in any numbers yet but if the 2003 class had a good spawn year in 2006 and 2007 we should be okay. This fishery is of course so important to all of us! We think of it almost like our kids. Little Dandy and I have hit it for almost 30 years together now and we've been friends almost 35! We should be out this weekend in the Cantgetenough III. Maybe Sunday afternoon with Grandkids and soninlaw!
