No fishing this weekend as I was tidying up the boat. ran more power to the riggers and got some cleaning done and worked on spooling more rods for the upcoming deep water season. I switched my longer leadcore rods to copper this year in an effort to get deeper and also to shorten the reeling time for customers and guests. Most people would agree reeling in an angry king on 21 colors of leadcore can get a wee bit tiring. For all those out there that may be spooling copper on your own set-ups, here is the breakdown, so you can avoid reeling the line on backwards and then again forward to get full spools. I have done the work for you in that regard.
I used Shimano Tekota 800 reels for 5 and a 700 for one. Mono is 30# Momoi Diamond with a diameter of .59 mm. Braid is Cortland Spectron in 50# and the copper is Howie 45#. Mono to braid knots are double uni and mono to copper are albright. A wrap is a complete handle turn.
All spools are topped percfectly. There is a reason for the lengths. I wanted 300, 450 and 600, and then possible 225 on the 700 size. However, I won a couple 600' spools and bought the 450' spools. Much to my chagrin, I found out you cannot fit 600' of Howie copper on a Tekota 800. So I measured out 250' and cut it off, therefore giving me a 250 and a 350'. I guess it never hurts to be a little different. I didnt want to get a whole lot shorter due to reel sizes. I have a Tekota 700 empty currently. I will likely toss a 225 on it and then put 150' lengths on some of my smaller reels. There you have it. Enjoy.

I have 600 copper #45 Howie's on the 800 Shimano not a lot of backing probable 150 yd. of 30 lb. braid. We make the fish swim side to side not out. ten pounds of copper slows them down very fast.

i was spooling the reel backwards so only had a short leader and I couldnt even fit the whole spool of copper on there. Maybe I didnt wind it tight enough... Anyway, those are the numbers I came up with.
