I'm thinking about buying a used boat that has a 2001 Ficht 225 on the back. The seller says low hours and in good shape.

A buddy of mine told me to be careful - that some older Fichts had some real problems.

Anyone here have experience with this motor?

Any suggestions on things that I should look at before buying this (or any other) used motor?

The company was in financial trouble when that motor was made . there where some real serious quality control issues at that time
plenty of the 225s where very reliable in spite but it was like the luck of the draw
They had a bunch of more serious issues with the 175s and 150s around that time
If the package is a real GREAT deal i would still consider it
if its only a fair deal i think it would be wise to pass on it
Also NOT the best engine to troll with

Thanks Frank. I'm not thinking it's a great deal, so I may just walk away.

Don't feel bad about walking away from the deal. I had a 1999 150hp take a dump with 137 hours on it. The dealer would not even try to fix it so I bought a new yamaha. Good job on doing your homework I didn't and it cost me big bucks. Good luck finding a rig lots of good deals,
