Don't fish with less brilliant people that are stuck in "Well, that's what worked in the 80's" mode. It's far more frustrating to fish with a has been than a wannabe!

You know we are friends! And I know you were just giving me trash lol... I was referring to a few guys I had the pleasure of fishing with the past two years on the tournament trail!

If you notice that the fish are short striking your lures, drop the boat in and out of gear occasionally. This change of speed imparts a noticeable effect on lure action and can often trigger strikes from following fish.

Get all your boat work done when its cold so you can fish when its nice out. Also, plan on doing touch up polishing in the slow time of year, in Michigan its often in June in the south end of lake Michingan. Great time to re-polish the boat and change oil.

Hiatus,
Often times people only think of their spread in terms of how deep (y) they are fishing in whatever depth of water. some guys go the next step and think of how far back they are behind the boat (x). I also like to include the (z) which is the relationship of lures/ baits to each other. I seem to do better on certain rigs on certain days when its in the water next to another lure/ flasher/ whatever. Some days everything needs to be spread out, other days I catch more with things close together. I think its all relative. Others may not agree, but That is how I think of my spread out there. I run 2 riggers but often stack and use sliders, so I have 8 baits in the water on 2 riggers with 4 rods. The way I look at it is to make a school of fish in the water and adjust the length behind the boat accordingly. I try to make my sliders (6' leads) just above of a flasher/ fly so it looks like another baitfish just hanging out with it. then the stacker is back behind and slightly above, kind of like a tailgunner and then another slider which is kind of away from everything but directly above it all. The other rigger, which is only 8-9' away gets set to work with the first one. Often no flahser but deeper so the stacker is in line with the flasher or just above or below. so i have a spoon off the main weight down and back of the opposite F/F rig and then a slider about even but low, then a stacker just above, but back and then another slider above. I think it looks like a cohesive spread in the water that way.
Then the divers are off to the sides even farther and the core is way back, but over top the divers and behind them. Lots of noise makers near the boat with a comprehensive spread of core behind it all. I think they all help each other.
There are days that i dont want anything near each other though and spread it all out. But they are still related, just a long way apart so kind of not related, but thats the relationship.
Got It? hahahahaha

It seems like there are times when one rig is going so we pull something else to re-do it and the original goes dead. put the pulled on back in and it goes off again. I always feel its an attractor issue. Something is attracting the fish and not necessarily the lure that is being hit.

Anyway.. that is the x, y, z of Salmonhead

When nothing is working, go deep with long leads and slow down. And don't forget to relax and just enjoy the time on the water.

Don't neglect your J-Plugs by keeping them out of the water until summer. They can be great producers in the early spring as well.

Not catching anything? Pull a rigger. Still not catching? Pull em all.

May, June, and anytime the surface is below 65 degrees run a plug on one side and a small spoon on the other side on planer boards, then stick the rods out of the way. Worth a steelie about every other trip.

Have all your lures picked and set up before you go. A lure not in the water can't catch fish. Hate getting out with someone at 4:30 AM, motoring out to the fishing grounds, and then watching them pick out lures. I can have my 4 rod harbor spread out in less than 3 minutes.

Take someone out who would never have the chance otherwise. I've picked up two fishing buddies (and two unhappy fishing buddies' wives) that way.

Try flashy lures with glow on them for steelhead on sunny days high in the water column. Orange isnt the only color they hit.

Never grab the net before a fish is ready to be netted. Makes it easier to grab another rod with a fish, or open the spread for the fish to be landed.
