Anyone feel free to answer, Honda cat if your looking I'd love you opinion.
I'm curious as to how long a well cared for 150 HP outboard motor "should" last. It's only had fresh water use, I'm assuming it's been properly cared for and winterized. I know for a fact it's never been in salt water. The motors (yes twin Outboards) one of the reasons for my concern, if something goes wrong twice the cost, have 1100 to 1200 hours on them and are about 14 years old. Do those hours agree with the age?? I haven't seen the motors, as I know if I see the boat I'll fall in love the dang thing and be hooking to the back of the truck before a survey is complete.
If I was in the market for a pair of 140 to 150 hp motors is there a used market I could pick these up on? I'm also wondering would a 250 Hp Four stroke work almost as well? I know I'd be losing some power, is there a reference to look at to see what is reccomended for a particular boat.
I guess my overriding question is: with the age and hours on these enginges, how much do they have left in them?
This will be a touchy area with the wife as I have no plans to get rid of the 19 ft CC I have now. SOOOO, if (BIG IF) I was to spring for a second boat it would have to be maint free for a while. These motors would be my biggest concern, I think (hope).
Thanks
Tim

not all outboards a created equal . that being said some outboards you would be lucky to get 200 hours on with out blowing them up . but those are the lemons some manufacturers have let loose on the publick . there are some late 70s motors running around still untouched other than REGULAR maintainance . these where before oil injection fuel injection life was simpler then but this is now . the uscg get a three year unlimited hour warranty from honda and they put 1000 hours on a motor in five months this could result in 6600 hours on a motor before it is out of warranty i would imagine they fully expect them to las at least that long . but all of this needs to be be fine tuned too what motor you are speaking of and what you plan on doing with it . call me at the store i would be glad to chat with you 708-862-2407 Frank aka honda cat
Been gone on business and just read your reply. First off thanks for the advice and the phone number. I thought about this boat while I was gone and decided to hold off on it. The boat is about what I think would be right for my summer big water needs, it's a 24 ft Grady White. The age is what bothered me about the boat, it's a 1988. I know with good care the boat would last that long easily and still be in fine working order.
But I have this personality fault that if something isn't working correctly it'll drive me nuts. Plus I'll be taking a 5yr and 7yr old out with me frequently, so i'll have no room for error. They are the reason I'm looking at something with a cabin, it will get them out of the cold and give them a place to goof off during the drive time ect.
If it was just me and all I was going to do was fish with adults, I just buy a bigger center counsel, I love those boats, but as I said above the kids will appreciate the enclosed area.
Once again thanks.

I'm guessing your dads boat doesnt go 15 to 20 miles out into lake Mi on a regular basis or go from Sheboygan WI to Manistee Mi 5 or 6 times a year either. I'm looking for a boat that I can drop the family in and motor across the lake with a piece of mind. The other part of the equation is like Honda cat mentioned, the type of outboards and their life expectancy. All outboards are not created equal.
My guess is the new Merc Varedos (sp) with the turbo charging are going to stress the motor big time.
I think we as fisherman are asking alot more out of our outboards than we used to, pushing a 6000 lb boat at 40 kts takes alot of energy which results in alot of wear and tear on any motor.
My current kicker has ALOT of hours on it, I wish I knew how many. I'd probably be amazed. But the are mid throttle easy hours on the engine, that little Mariner has been one sweet motor.
It's kinda neat to see those older motors around, just think of all the fun someone has had with that boat.

weight? Trailerability? length? Beam? How slow will it troll down on one motor? Speed? Cost? I'm guessing you net down the shoot? Freeboard height?
I've heard the Cats ride really smooth in rough seas, any stories. How about a website to check out the details. I think I'd be the first one in my area of WI how about a first time WI buyer discount
I looked at some Cats last year at the Daytona Boat show, but didn't see any in the water. Do they sit higher in the water than other boats?
I'm a used boat kind of guy, slightly used that is, my market is in the 5 yr or less range. Do you see many in that range or are they too new to the great lakes?
Ya, know I'm one of like two CC's out of Sheboygan, I'm sure I'd be the only Cat!
