As I sit at night going over my equipment for this year and throwing out some "used up" equipment from last year, I stumbled across some of my gear that I had thrown in a bucket "in the heat of the moment" while fishing the big pond. Lo and behold, I came across quite a few Purple Taco flies that had seen better days........and I remember well why they look the way they do.
Dateline: Ludington, 1st weekend of August, 2004.
My brother-in-law Rick and I are chasing the silvers.....the dipseys are out, the riggers are riggin' and the silvers were hittin!!
(From the tangled mass at the bottom of the bucket I pull three of my favorite PT flies and caress them fondly, 'cause the memories of that trip come flooding back.) Those poor flies didn't have a chance running off the rigger behind a dodger and the Ridgeback, a dipsey, or a slider!! I remember why they ended up in the bottom of the bucket. After about 4 Kings and Steelies mouthing them (those nasty fish ) I thought it prudent to change out to new ones. And we all know that you have to maintain the "flow" when the fish are jumpin in the boat, so with reckless abandon, I relegated these faithfull friends to the "heap".
Needless to say I have quickly checked my stock of Purple Taco Flies and figure I have enough to get me through the first two weeks of fishin'.
Curt, keep 'em coming!! I hear you have some new and interesting patterns and colors for this year...oh boy!!
Best,

Chip
I have a Purple Taco that has been responsible for the demise of 27 salmon now. It looks like death warmed over but you know what? I still use it and it still continues to get mauled by fish. It will recieve a well earned retirement when it ceases to catch fish or it gets broken off by moby salmon.

So Jim, are you saying that you keep using the same "skirt" over and over and retying if you feel abrasions or nicks?? "cause if mine were a hula skirt there would be a whole lot of skin showin!!

I keep a 50lb spool of Big Game handy at all times for just such a reason. You gonna toss your hottest fly in the trash just because the leader is nicked? If that's what you do, just send them to me instead. I'll pay shipping.

Josh, thanks for the insipation..........I can see it now:
SALE!!!!! Proven fish catchin' lures of all kinds, most are in decent shape with noticeable teeth marks and pieces missing, but (guanateed to have been) removed from service in the heat of the battle!!
Good points!! I usually always carry extra 30-40 # line for making up new leads, etc. but never really thought about re-tying the flys and reusing the skirts....duh

That's exactly what I do Chip. I just move the fly to a new leader. I usually just buy skirts and snell my own Mustad Triple Grip Ultra-Point and beads, then send it down for another fish. Sometimes a lot of skin showing is a good thing. The fewer strands of mylar left, the more the fly gets whipped around. That's sometimes the ticket to provoke a strike.

Well I think I'm in business then. Maybe Curtis can start making Purple Taco Flies with "alittle" skin showing!!
