I know, I know - it depends on the mood of this fish...

What about a starting point for fly leader length. (top of loop to back of fly)

Dodgers?

Flashers?

I'm seeing some real long leaders lengths this year, just wondering if I missed the memo.

I use mostly 21 inches top of loop to (NOSE) of fly, that would make your measurement around 25 inches.
Unless of course I am using a peanut fly then it is 12 inches top of loop to nose of fly.

I normally use 21-22 inches from the top of the loop to the hook, but yesterday my brother sent out an old beat-up Howie Fly with about 2 strands of tinsel left on it and I'll be damned if that thing didn't take 3 nice kings. When I put it away for the day I noticed it looked kinda short, so I laid it out on the ruler and it measured 18 inches. Really makes you think! Changing fly lead lengths is not something I have messed around with too much, but with the fish as aggressive as they have been, maybe I'll try shortening things up a bit.

I mix them up anywhere from 18 to 22 inches. Some days there is a big difference in what they like.

When on the water with no measuring device handy, I go with 3Xs the length of the attractor with the end/bend of the hook at the 3rd length.
