Good evening Frank,

I have some bad news and maybe you can tell me how bad the news is.

Last week I struck a bolder with my prop on my 2 year old Merc 115 four stroke outboard. I replaced the prop and thought I was all set. Turns out that there is a tapping noise in the lower unit so something is wrong in there. Do you have any idea what it might be and about what I would expect to pay for the work. I plan on taking it to the shop next week but just did not want to be surprised by the answer I get. The engine itself runs fine, the noise only happens when in gear.

Do you need any other info?

Richard

dont run the engine!
take it in as soon as posible you probably broke a gear tooth and this tooth can get shot out the side of the housing if the motor runs much more . the good news is its probably covered by your boat insurance . save the prop to show the impact evidence . let us know what happens and good luck!

According to the machanic all is well. He took most of it apart and could not find anything wrong. He believes it is just the gears being a little sloppy and with it out of the water you can hear them. Once the prop is in the water with the resistance on the prop all the noise goes away.
