This thread discusses the Content article: Hazard of mercury in fish debated

Having researched and spoken many times publicly about this topic, I find this article somewhat challenging at best. A few points to ponder....

Could the restrictions be more stringent? Of course.

Could the grocery stores, gourmet food shops, and restaurants do more to help? Of course. Anyone ever look at the almost non-existent regulations for Health Food Stores...egads....

Should the fish consumption advisories issued by each state be more aggressively promoted? Of course.

Should the consumption advisories be equated from state to state? Of course.

Is Methyl-Mercury poisonous? Of course.

Is the FDA solely responsible for problem? I think not.

Too many factors play into this problem. The efforts of the FDA and the states to issue blanket advisories has proven problematic.

Bottom line. Fish is good for you. The Omega-3 fat found in fish is heart healthy, and the protein is "complete protein," which is a very good thing. Consume it just like you should everything else....in moderation. And for cripes sake...don't eat swordfish (which might not be commercially available in the U.S. in the near future anyway due to overfishing) or tilefish.

What I find most troubling about all of this is how we spend so much time and resources on a subject that typically affects a small portion of the total U.S. population (fish eaters). People who eat fish know that there are advisories. The advisories are established based on 52 fish-meals per year. Find me 500 people in a state that eat fish 52 times a year (every year) and I'll give you a dollar.

Could there be more done with this issue. Sure...but I think the FDA and the states should be commended for seemingly trying to get the word out the best that they can.

Oh...and why don't we hear much about the source of all this Mercury anyway.....hmmmmm....
