I would recommend Shimano, Diawa, and Tica spinning reels. Have always had good luck with these brands. The Shimano Sedona is between $50-70 depending on the size of the reel. Diawa Regal Xi are in the $40 range. Under $40 I would look at the Shimano Sienna series.

Main characteristics I look for are front drag, instant anti-reverse, good smooth drag, roller guide on the bail, metal spool, and an extra spool. A good test of the drag is to put some line on and then let the reel's weight try to pull line off. The reel should not freefall, but go don slowly and smoothly.

I don't like the "trigger" bail reels -- just too many problems. For certain types of fishing you will not get instant pickup when you close the bail which will cause lost fish.

Conrad,

I absolutely love the two Pfleuger President spinning reels that I purchased last year. 9 ball bearings and silky smooth. They cost around $60.00 each, and I bought them as a combo at Cabela's, which also included my choice of rod.

I also have a Shimano Sahara that has performed well in the river, along with my two Penn reels. Those three reels were in the $50.00 range.

Judging from last weekend, you are right on the money when you are saying you need an up-grade. We'll be in the river in the next week or so...so get on it.

I agree with Ryan...I have a Shimano Sedona that is very, very nice....especially for the money. It is almost as smooth as my Shimano Stradics that cost twice as much.

I like my Okumas, and they have reels that fit in each of the listed price ranges.

These ARE the good old days!
