Is there a safe way to do this without damaging the leadcore?

not really - sooner or later it will cost you a fish - or some core and a board ... if you are trying to make a leadcore reeel that is flexible for different lengths you can put mono segements in between the desired lengths so you can hook the board in

for example if you want a rod that will pull duty as a half core and full core put a 20 foot section of mono in between the fifth and sixth color.

Hook,

I fish sections of leadcore on Erie all the time for walleyes and it works great. Typically for my side of the boat I'll have a 2 color, 3 color, and maybe even a 4 color out behind boards. You can pull just about any type of walleye presentation behind it, but spoons and cranks work best for me. I'm quite sure that crawler harnesses would take fish behind core as well. I'm using 10# Vanish leaders, about 25' in length, but am considering going shorter after reading other posts on the subject.

I'm not a big fan of Snap weights...they do work of course...but I just think the sectioned core is easier...

Hope that helps,

BFG

As long as you don't have core in the rod tip (unless you are using a roller tipped rod), you can attach to the core by half hitching a rubberband to it and then placing the rubberband into the clip on the board. The core will weaken from the friction of rubbing back and forth in the tip and break like wind.
