The fact that the releases aren't fixed in position is an advantage. When one of the lines takes a hit and is released you can simply let out the rest of the lines one position and reset the tripped line as the closest to the boat. When i used big boards a lot it wasn't unusual for me to have a dozen empty releases that had slid down to the board before I had to bring the board in to retrieve them. That is a bit risky though as they would all be lost in the event that your line to the board breaks.
