You'll eventually get a feel for how tight they should be. Start with them "too loose" and turn the screw 1/8 to 1/4 turn at a time until they quit tripping on thier own. If they won't trip when a fish hits your drags might be set too light, if the fish doesn't have something to pull against it can't trip the dipsey.
