According to a manufacturer that i talk with frequently, the way i understand what he tells me is it has more to do with the fredom for the front end to wiggle. If you have swivels that constrict this motion, use a ring. If you have wide swivels, then its not really necessary. He sells spoons both ways, but a lot of his personal stash have the rings. I add to some and not others. no ryme or reason in my box really
