Frank: I really like the hydraulic assist on my older Slickcraft 28fter, but youre right--they can be a problem if you lose fluid. Two years ago I had a new autopilot installed (mfr to remain anon!!). The unit worked fine for a couple of weeks, then one day about 11 mi S of Manistee harbor, the autopilot simply wouldn't work. Switching to manual, that wouldn't work either, the wheel just spinning free. I had no autopilot, and no manual steering, with the rudders jammed hard to starboard. Fortunately I have twins, and with about a half-hours jockeying around in circles, I was able to work the rudders to nearly straight. I was then able to get back to Manistee using the throttles to steer. Turned out the elec hydraulic pump that was supplied with the autopilot was defective, and leaked all the hydraulic fluid. If I had a single engine, I would have ben in for an 11mi tow, plus the inspection from hell from the coasties.
