This thread discusses the Content article: Yellow perch might be recovering from decimation

What I would like to see is a study that compares the Great Lakes to those native lakes where the quagga mussels originate. Are those waters barren wastelands as well??

I highly doubt it....

Nature has a way of taking care of things...I've recently read several articles that outlined the decline of the zebra mussels in the Great Lakes. Replaced by the quagga?? Perhaps, but just like your fish bowl at home...only so many living things can live/exist in there in so much space with only so much food. But over time, the ecosystem adjusts.

No great surprise as to the increased catches of kings, and in addition to that, their decreased average size. They are hungry (easier to catch it would seem) than ever before...even if we like to think that our SWR's and meat rigs are helping our catch rates. In all, it's an ecosystem that is crumbling at the base, but in time, it will recover. To what extent the fishery will survive is the big question....

Hopefully the stocking reductions help....and in the case of the perch, the severe reduction in the daily limits seems to have worked as well.

Tough playing with Mother Nature, eh???
