Like Greg said, the length of your rod is a great rule of thumb until you gain more experience as to just what you can get away with. An even shorter leader down to 3-6' or so will work better some days than a longer 8-10' one as the diver not only takes your lure down and out, it also doubles as an attractor. Other days they seem to prefer a longer distance from diver to lure.
