Anyone doing catch and release of Salmon caught trolling? I figure since we may be facing an impemding crash of the food chain - we might find that it becomes neccessary to Catch and Release. DOn't know what I'd put in the smoker - but I'm just speculating hat might change if we do have a crash in population.

Speaking of catch and release, I just have to tell you about a fine gentleman that I met today. He happens to make RAC spoons in Windsor and is a great fisherman. His top slamon this year won BIG fish on Lake Ontario.....a 38#'er!!!!! Anyway, he caught and released a few 30# + kings this year....drool.....His name is Roy Aldous, a fine man for sure. He invited me to sample some of the lake Ontario KINGS this next season. I think I'll try and find the time to take him up on the offer!!
Now you guys and gals can really start dreamin'
Best,

man they get the big fish in Lake Ontario - 38# - I hear they take a fish over 40 most years - that could be fish tales though.

I release a lot of the smaller salmon I catch as long as they are in good shape (brought in quickly, not bleeding, not netted). I know that they are the best eaters but I can only eat so much salmon in a year and the longer it takes to box a limit, the longer I get to stay out fishing. I release nearly all lake trout but I'm re-thinking that policy. With the huge numbers of lakers in Lake Huron and the shortage of bait, I think it would be beneficial to the overall fishery if more lake trout were removed from the lake. Fewer mouths to feed.

Is there an issue with the depth and having to puncture the air bladder? ... taking a fish from 100ft and trying to release it may be problematic. Maybe not

It seems like the key phrase is "brought in quickly". Anything on a diver or leadcore is going to probably be way out there...not going to be quickly brought in.

OUCH! My arms hurt just thinking about that. I think those things had the world's lowest gear ration...about 2" retrieval per turn...at least that's what it seemed like.

Greg,
Depth is something I never really considered in releasing fish. The little guys always take off like a bullet after I toss them back. That's a good point...hmmm.

Tom,
I'm with you. Divers usually aren't a problem getting little fish in quickly on but it is often the core that puts smaller fish in my cooler instead of back in the lake. A lot of times you can be dragging a shaker around on the core and not even know it until too late to save them. That's why I set my drag just tight enough that line stops leaking out from the board pulling. That way the clicker alerts me to a fish, even the little guys.
