Need some copper input

Decisions, Decisions. What to do with a 450' spool of 45# copper?

When spreading out lines, I've already got 4 core setups (2 full & 2 half). I've also got a couple SWR's that can double as board rigs if fish are higher up. And I've got a 300' 45# copper rig for deeper presentations.

I'm leaning towards putting the whole 450 on one reel with 300yds of 50# PP backing for deeper yet fish. But could be talked into doing something different (maybe another 300 and a 150???) if there were good reasons.

What reel will nicely hold the full 450' copper with the PP backing? Would the Tekota 800 be big enough?

Any suggestions from you salmon experts?

I'd set up for deeper fishing. This last year I fished the lead cores high and used coppers to go deeper. I'd set up a 300 and 450 copper. From my experience thats getting close to a 15 and 20 colors of lead in depth. Then you can step it up to running 3 birds rods a side.

Thanks Matt, that kinda confirms my thinking about having a deeper option.

So the question remains, what reel for this application? I like the speed of the Tekota 800, but does it have the capacity for the copper & backing? If not, what's everyone using for their 450' copper rigs?

Mike,I have a Tekota 800 and 5 or 6 of the Okuma CV55L,s.I believe that the Okumas have a lot more capacity. As far as retrieve you can get equal amounts of line in a lot faster with the Okuma.I have been using the CV55Ls for several years now and have not had any issues.yes the Tekota has a smoother drag but so far this hasnt been an issue.I think for the dollar difference its a tuff decision.I guess that it may depend on if your chartering lots or just some salmon fishing as to the longevity difference. If I remember right you do more walleye?80-90 dollar difference in price.

okuma convector cv55l works great for my 450' 45#copper reel. it was by far my best weapon this past summer. probably 25%of my fish came on this one rod and i run 11-13 rods per outing. i ran this down the shute and let out as much as i needed to get to the depth my depth raider and fish finder would tell me. the only thing i wish was that it had a line counter on it. i know this would probably not be accurate with what line i let out because of the diameter but it would allow me to place it in the same amount of line i previously just landed the last fish. i do hear now that they have some copper that is marked every so many feet but i will wait for next year to find that. but i love the reel and the copper worked great but be very cautious thumbing it into the water it really tangles easily. good luck tom

Mike...

Send a PM to Werner (Popeye). He runs long coppers on Lake O. If I recall correctly, we ran a 500' and a 600' copper rig when we fished with him a couple years back.

I think he uses some sort of big Penn saltwater series reel with a high retrieve ratio.
