At what speed do you like to run at the ball for different bates?
We have been running 1.7mph. This fall and it seams to be working, we have never trolled this slow before. Just wondering what you guys like to run, when trolling?

For me it depends what type of fish I am targeting.

Lakers- 1.5-2.2
Kings- 2.0-2.7
Steelhead- 2.5-3.5
Browns- 1.8-2.3

For a general speed when I dont care what we catch I try and stay between 2.0 and 2.5.

No matter what lure I am using I try and stay in these ranges. Sometimes you need to make small adjustments for different lures but these work good for me. If I have big flashers mixed in my spread I will run towards the slower end.

Well I grew up with the 1.8 and straight rule pounded into my head. However I usually fish around 2.5 at the ball and I allmost never drive straight. Course changes help dial in boat speed if you turn to port and the starboard poles go off you are going to slow and if you get a port side hit on a port turn you are going to fast. If I am in traffic and can't turn I am constantly changing speed and may run anywhere from 2.0 to 3.5 if I am in traffic and not getting fish I will be going fast to get out of there or pulling lines and hauling butt. Marks on the fishfinder don't mean much to me gas is not cheap so if they ain't biting color me gone. Either somewhere else or back to the house it don't matter to many guys go out and fish with the herd I am not one of them. I allmost never fish in the channel nor do I fish right out front unless I am the only boat there. Go out and find what works best for you following the herd back and forth won't help. I don't know how long you have fished out here but it is a big lake so there is no need for all the boats to fish in the same spot. Nothing better than listening to a dozen boats all try to catch the same fish or 2 that won't bite when I am a couple miles away and can't keep a line in the water.
