Well it's that time of year - get the tools out and replace a number of hooks for spoon. I have heard and know a couple of folks that haver replaced the trebles with single hooks. I'm not sure what to think about this - I do remember a number of old time classic spoons that were all single hooks (no trebles) and you still see that out west.
That being said I think I'll stick with the treble hooks for this upcoming season - maybe try a few with single hooks. I will replace regular sized spoons with 2/0 and the magnums with 3/0. I'm thinking about trying the Mustad Triple Grip with its differnt profile which allegedly make this treble have better hook setting capabilities. Always willing to accept technology if it seems to make sense.
Any thoughts?

I run a lot of single hooks on my spoons , hard to tell if they are better or not but you need to go with what you have confidence in. As far as trebles I switch any trebles to ewg Gamagatsu { spelling} except for Fishlanders , those I leave on stock as I think they are a decent hook , not sure what hooks Mike is putting on the Fishlanders. I think I may get a few more hook ups with trebles but I think I lose fewer fish with singles , just my opinion .

Well guys, I got the bug to change out the hooks on my spoons last year during low light months, but I changed 'em out to red trebles. If it was a spoon that came with a single, I put a red single on it. You get the picture. Did they catch more fish??? Couldn't tell ya, but they sure looked pretty in the water Like I've said before ....its all good. I think as long as they are good and sharp and you re-tie often when catching fish you'll do alright. Best, Chip

I switched over to singles on all my spoons about 4 years ago after going something like 4 for 12 on steelhead one day. I can honestly say that my catch rate has gone up or at least stayed the same since then, plus storage is MUCH easier, I use Gamakatsu 3/0 and 4/0 open eye siwash hooks for my spoons. They stay sharp forever!

I'm stuck in indecision mode for sure - think I'll switch up some to singles - that hooks was exactly what I was looking at Josh - 3/0 for regulars, 4/0 for magnums?

Tom, as far as ease of installation, there is no such thing . I just use split ring pliers and an occasional finger nail (ouch) and twist and shout!! Its a way to kill some down time and think about fishing. Best,
