OK I'm going to build some spoons - not sure that I'm going to start from blanks but I want to make a bunch spoons that have circle hooks. Anyone here building their own spoons? Are you painting them yourself?

Greg , I paint a lot of my own spoons , I like to experiment with different colors and tapes. I like the Silver Streak and Fishlander blanks to use because I like the action of thier spoons. I normally sort through and pick out spoons that have had the paint worn off or not very productive and use those blanks , you can buy spoon blanks at some tackle stores and through Jans Netcraft. I clean the spoons and remove the old tape and paint , I use automotive panit when I can but have used spray cans from the hardware as well , I put a coat of clear enamel from a spray can to help hold the paint on and give the spoon a deep clear color. I have sealed tupperware container filled with tapes and eyes and ladder backs that I use to finish the spoons off with , tapes and such are availabe at some tackle stores and Jans Netcraft as well. In this tupperware container I also have several different sissors from the craft dept. at any craft store or Joanns fabric's , these sissors are the ones that have different cutting patterns and I cut my tape with them to make different designs for the spoons , use your imagination with the sissors. I also keep this box on the boat so I can doctor spoons while fishing if I find something hot. It is a fun way to pass time in the winter and I have made a few that were real hot and not a copy of somebody eles's. I aslo paint some of my body baits and old j-plugs as well , gives new life to old tackle . There is a new glow paint out as well that I want to get and try this year on some of the tackle. I just recently got an air brush that I am going to experiment with and see if I can make a real mess out of some tackle. I took and old piece of wood { 6 inch x 10 inch} and put 6 finish nails accross the top to hang the spoons from with the hole in the spoon , I then paint them and hang the wood up and let them dry and this way I havn't made a big mess all over anything. I also have painted my downrigger weights as well trying to make something special , still painting looking for the secret if there is one. A little long winded but I am in to details. Give me a call , next Wed. will work for me , let me know when and where.

That's cool FR - I've always passed the tapes and ladder backs and stuff in the tacklestore and wondered if I should grab some. We have guys in the marina who modify or do their own all the time. Well that pushes me over the edge - I'm going to do it.

So is there a method to the madness - are you building ones as derivations from ones that you know are working. My bass fishing friends that make their own jigs and spiiner baits and say there is no feeling like catching fish on a lure that you made. I cant wait. Jann's Netcraft - http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/ cool stuff. Now - going to airbrush - I think you'll dig that - I used to be a model builder (one of my favorite hobbies) and used the airbrush all of the time. Once you get used to it you'll find it gives you so much more control and accuracy.

I'm in ... wooohooo some more variables to add, which is cool. I'm also going to try focus on some of the stuff my neighbor gave me - he's from Long Island. Some minature jet heads and other types of trolling gear which looks like it should work well for salmon and steelhead.
