I was taught that you set the drag to 1/2 the test - so 30 # line - drag to 15#. I have set my reels that way measuring with my digital scale ... but I have fished boats where the drag is set very light - other boats where it seemed to be on the tight side, and then ofcourse, most boats which are set to where ever they were left LOL. How do you set up?

I just set my drags by feel , kind of a none answer but I set everything up and then pull a little line out by hand and can tell by feel if it is where I want it set. It normally ends up being just enough that if you reel against the presure of the release that the drag starts to slip a little and that I have to manually pull line into the reel as I reel when I am tighting down the rods in the release. I do run the Off Shore Black release's though and they may be a little tighter than what others run.

I'm thinking that our drags may be a little on the tight side - but maybe not. I can pull line out fairly easily but I can crank against the downrigger and take line in without having to pull it in by hand. Some of the other boats that I've fished you had to hand line to get line back on the reel. Hmmmmmmmm.
