Anyone using these - it appears to be a 3-way swivel with like a 1 ounce weight and then an attracter/spoon combo on wire. Looks like a pretty good set-up - I'm not familiar with how and when to use them but thought I'd ask the question.

Greg , Yes I run a 1 pound lead ball on wire , its called a thumper rod by some. I run a rudder that has the hole dilled in the bottom to attach the 1 pound ball in place of the 3 way swivel , either way will work but I like the rudder. I have a short piece of wire{ mono works ok and acts as an break point if you hang the ball up on bottom } attached to the lead ball and the other end to a large snap swivel and I attach the snap to the bottom hole in the rudder , off from the rear hole of the rudder I run a snubber and a 6 piece of mono to the lure or attractor. I used to run 1 pound drop wieghts a lot and was very successful at it , I have switched to running the wire thumper rod more , it is a very good speed indicator as well. It seems like the 1 pound ball rig normally take the most of my big kings every year. I run it down the middle most of the time but also can move it over to either side of the boat in a rear rod holder if needed. I also will clip a 1 pound ball to an Offshore snapper release and clip my ball onto the wire about 50 feet ahead of the lure at times , this also is a very good way to run a ball on wire and you don't need the rudder or 3 way swivel , some one has to remove the ball and release when you get the fish close to the boat.

cool I was worried that I wouldn't have anything to buy this winter - got to get some thumper rigs!!! I said 1 ounce but meant one pound ... any idea how deep it runs? It defintely looked like a cool setup as an alternative to drop leads.

Greg , with wire I'm still not sure , I have a GMT-40 that I need to put on it and check depth. The mono that I used to run was 25 pound test and it worked at about a 3 to1 ratio at 2.4 mph , for every 3 feet of line out , it dropped 1 foot. The wire drops quicker , maybe a 2 to 1 ratio but not sure , like I said I need to run the GMT-40 and check or just run it on the flats and let line out until it touchs bottom and check the depth. I also use power-pro braid for similar set up and it drops almost the same as wire does , but it doesn't have the same hum as the wire. The nice thing about the mono is that it is running far enough back that it never gets into any thing when a fish is on , but the wire you have to watch and move the rod to keep fish out of it some times. My best set up for the mono was to let out attractor fly combo 40 feet and the put the lead ball on and zero my counter and start letting line out , I would start at 210 feet on the counter and that was running at about 70 feet , depending on speed and current. A lot of times a big king will rip off another 300 feet of line before you can turn him , between the line you started with out and the first run , you can have well over 600 feet of line out , that will get your adrenaline going but it will put the burn in your fore arm too. Its a way cool set up , I switch between rods and reels to get the combo I need working , my wire divers can double as a thumper rig , my power-pro divers can double as 1 pound ball rig with a snap on wieght and I still keep a 25 mono diver rig set up for 1 pound balls or as a mono diver on the rare occassions I need a mono diver. Let me know if you want any more info. on the 1 pound lead ball set ups , there are a lot of different ways to run them but this is the way I run them.

I'm going to have to start running wire ... I don't have a single wire rig - I have mono 30# Big Game divers and Power Pro divers. Never really liked the feel of fighting a fish in the wire - but I did use some this year on friends boats and I know I have to make the plunge. Been looking at the Shimano wire rods - not sure yet may wait for the spring shows - see if I can't find some deals.

Yeah I definetly want more details about these - I'm thinking about starting to convert some of these to articles and making a category for setups and such. What do you think? - like to take some pictures and what not for those that are looking for information on how to make these. The Educated part of the site so to speak LOL!

Don't like to fight fish on wire? First time I've heard that!
Thumpers don't catch the majority of the fish for me but they do account for some of the bigger ones. If it works, here's a depth chart put together by Ernie Lantienge for wire thumpers.
sorry, the board won't allow me to add the chart to my post. Any suggestions?

fire it to me in email info@educatedangler.com- are you trying to post a picture or a link?

I guess I should say that I have found that wire is difficult to fish with inexperienced anglers on board - I could be wrong. For me personally it may be that I've never had the right kind of setup on it, with the right rod and proper setup. Believe me I would hand line 'em if I thought it would work !!!! But I will get the right setup, rods and reels, and practice, practice, practice - the wire defintely produces.
