what is the best way to set up a wire rod? I have a2 gander roller rods with okuma cv 45`s

I guess the first decision is if you want 20# or 30# wire ... it's a personal taste ... we run 30#. I have wire on Shimano 600 LCs ( line counters) becasue two of them we run for diver duty mainly.

I have all of the reels spooled up with full spools of 1000' feet of wire on each. Should put a little bit of backing or use some duct tape just to protect the spool.

If you are going to use the wire rigs for bottom bouncing with 1# or 1.5# drop weights line counters aren't necessary, but if they are going to be diver rods counters are required so I assume the CV45 is the line counter model.

I'm thinking you are going to want dacron backing on the reels as 1000' of wire won't fill them up enough to function properly imho.

I'd recommend 30# wire to start. Braided wire demands a vigilant eye for kinks and the 30# is easier to keep kink free. Try to avoid slack line whenever possible.

Spool the wire on TIGHT! Then before you deploy it put a lead ball on and let out as much of the wire as practical and then crank it back in. This is the best way I know to ensure a good tight spool and smooth passage of wire off the spool when an angry fish is trying to rip your rod holder off the boat.

Terminate the wire with a sturdy ball bearing snap swivel tied on with a simple overhand knot which leaves the swivel at the end of a .5 - 1" or so loop.

Like Greg said the rig is now ready for double duty as either a diver rod or a meatball rod (lead ball usually .25 - 2#). Either way you use it I personally recommend a good quality snubber to absorb some of the fish induced trauma that the non-stretch wire can't.
