SAR mini-tourney strategies....

Per the chat discussion last night, and after Coz provided the last 5 years of Salmonarama stats...I pose the following questions regarding the Two on a Boat, Silver Sweeps, and GLA Challenge...

Should teams consider hammering the shallows for browns as opposed to plying the deeper waters for kings, rainbows, and lakers? Brown trout have won the last 5 SAR's for largest fish...and there were some absolute pigs weighed in last year.

Seems everything we read on most message boards is targeted towards catching kings, but rarely do we read about targeting browns in the warm-weather months. With the king size noticeably smaller in recent years (although last year may have shown a slight increase) it would only make sense to target the browns, especially for the mini-tournies within SAR.

Is fishing for browns in the summer different from fishing for browns in the winter? Same tactics? Same locations? I recall catching 6 browns one July morning a few years back in <50fow just south of the harbor mouth at Racine. We also took a pig of a king that day (20.4#) in the same location.

Just seems to me that a lot of teams at SAR are so focused on kings, that they run right over (and forget) the browns right under their boats for the first 10 minutes of running.

Any input is appreciated. My largest brown to date is a 9# caught by accident last year during SAR. I'd like to improve on that...

Clark I have said many times if you want money during a individual species touney, you need to spend your time either fishing grease or browns. It is a lot easier said then done when you are spending a day on the water not catching much, especially if you know where to go catch kings. Ask Bobby, afer he spent a morning pounding for trout with me and only boating one of the two bites and catching kings on the higher rods at trout speed... Makes it very hard to keep fishing trout. There are a couple guys every year for the manty tournement that target browns and every year always at least end up on the board.

If you had the time to really learn the area maybe but if the brown program was the hot ticket I think Craig and Dustin and Rich and Mike would be on it?They know where the money is come tourney time. The one I think where it may be the hot ticket is the Silver Challenge, now help me with this .Isnt it a bring your best 5 or 10 to the scale?I think if it was a 5 fish deal you might be able to pull a sneaker off but after the first time I bet the boys would be pounding them and they can do it.Remember you still got to get the limit to weigh and if your not productive in the brown deal you may have to say its time to pull the plug and go after the kings.A near and dear freind of mine is obsessed with hitting the 15 fish limit in our club deals where you wiegh the best 10 with a 15 fish limit. My take is that when you hit the 10 fish mark it is time to be selective as in if it isnt bigger than the smallest fish in the box he goes back for another day.

To answer Lances question.SalmonARama(SAR)is a 9 day fishing derby with several one day tournaments with in it.The big fish deals with fish being caught either during the tournies or by folks fishing otherwise.Best part is as long as you have a SAR ticket you can fish anywhere up or down the coast.Doesnt matter where you launch as long as you register the fish at SAR headquarters in racine. http://salmonarama.com/standings/

Ok here is the deal in my opinion.
For the mini tournaments you can NOT fish for browns, it is hard to get a limit on them in the summer.
For the 2 in a boat silver sweeps and silver challenge you HAVE to have all your fish to win being that it's 10 pts a fish. If you are going to win you will also need an average of 10 lbs per fish or better.
Now for the big fish part of SAR it definately would be worth while to target them, if and it's a big if you can figure out where the big ones are.....
The trouble is that I'm not sure you will find the big browns in any one location in the summer. At least I haven't found them in any concentration that you could bank on.
With the exception that there are often times good numbers of browns in kenosha harbor that time of year.
I don't think it's true that browns won the grand prize the last 5 years....

Clark I may have misled you the derby winner may not have been browns all 5 years but the majority of the bigger fish have been.
