Hi Gimlet...wecome aboard EA!

Ideally, you would use the following:

2 runs of 10 or 12 Gauge Wire (one positive and one negative)...long enough to reach from your battery box to the rear of the boat

2 single (or 1 double) bus bar...also called a terminal strip

Crimp on ring connectors for the battery end (these are the large diameter ones)

Crimp on ring connectors for the bus bar end (small diameter)

Mount the busbars near the transom of the boat...preferably up high where they will stay dry. Connect the downrigger wires to the busbars. Connect the battery wires to the busbars. Connect the battery wires to the battery.

If you want to make the downriggers removable, cut the downrigger wires in half and use a twist-lock waterproof plug...the ones designed for trolling motors work great.

You can find out a lot more about downrigger installation in the EA article BoatGear: Installing Downriggers.

Hope that helps,
Tom
