HOW FAR TO THE SIDE WILL A DIPSEY RUN???

II've changed my spread a little this year. Instead of 4drs and a couple of fireline slidedivers, I'm only running 2 drs, straight back off each corner, with a SWR set-up on each. Then I'm running a wire dipsey at #2 and a fireline slidediver at #4 off each side. I have 2 half-cores and 2 full cores available to add lines when I have more fishermen, or vary the spread. Since the SWR rig will put the lure 100-125 ft behind the ball, I'm wondering if I'm running a risk of a really ugly snafu with the wire dipsey and the SWR. How far to the side will a wire dipsey at #2 run?? I realize that this will depend on the lure used and boat speed, but I'm looking for general guidelines. I set my divers very carefully, putting the diver in the water, then putting the rod in the holder and backing off the drag so that the diver tracks properly and goes down slowly. I know that you're supposed to set "outside-in", but I always set the SWRs first, as I can get them down where I want them very quickly. I'm also running a center DR with the temp probe and a large flasher attached to the ball with no fly.

Thanks--Dave

I don't really know how far dipseys get to the side but I do know it's a significant amount especially as you pass 100' of line out. Divers will get more "side bite" by using magnum rings too which increase the planing surface.

As far as the swr's getting into the divers. I don't think you'll have any problem with it. I've ran swr's on my corner riggers without problems. I run my inside wire divers on 1.5 and my outside at 3 and slide diver on 5 when running 3 divers per side. The divers fall behind on turns but so does the swr so they should stay seperated. If they did cross I think that they'll just uncross as the boat straightens and things swing back into place. As long as your swr's are fairly deep like 45'+ I doubt the lines will ever even get close to each other.

Yeah, I have run this set-up several times so far, with no problems yet, however we haven't had much boat traffic yet at Manistee. Soon when the traffic gets real bad and you occaisionally have to make some sharp maneuvers, I worry a little. I only run big rings on all my divers, and I have compiled some data on depth with line out, so that's all I use. So far this year it has been working out fine, and I've been averaging nearly 2 fish per hour.

Hey Dave
How goes it? Is the experiment still paying off?

Hi Jim: Sorry I didn't answer sooner, we've been up to Manistee since 7/27. I'm still using the same spread, and this has been one of my best years. Earlier in the season, the SWR and wire divers were going off about equal, but for the last month or so, the wire divers have been taking by far the most fish. I keep real meticulous records, and I think that I'll post the percentages of my catch that come on each rig, since virtually every trip has been with the same spread.
