Often while fishing a fray spot or tangle will render leadcore useless. I do a quick fix on the water that has never failed me. Especially during a tournament, if you have a hot core rod, you cant afford to be without it. If a snarl or fray renders it useless, I get out the snips and go to town. I always carry spare core with me, so fixes are quick and easy. Check out my photogallery in EA tools and look for the album called double or back to back Uni-knot. I layed out pictures with descriptions to show you how to tie tow pieces of core together. This knot also works well for superline to mono and mono to mono or mono to flourocarbon. Just remember, if Mono or floro are involved in the knot, to wet it heavily before the final tightening when the two knots slide towards each other. The core to core it works much better leaving the sheath dry. It will slide better.
Often by the end of the season I will have 1-5 additional knots in my core rods. If a tangle takes out 3 colors, I will spool on 3 new colors. If its got a fray spot, I cut it out and retie it back together minus the bad spot. It works well and keeps that core in the water. I have never had this knot fail and i use them alot. They will reel into most any reel and work well through the eyelets as well.
