I've used the BWD110183 8'3" L 6-20 Downrigger rods. They are on the light side for tournament fishing but are nice rods overall. I'm not sure what backbone has to do with running dodger/flies. It'd be like adding a few pounds to the weight of your fish is all. We never experienced any problems while running dodgers on them.

For fun fishing I really like a lighter backboned rod. They really add to the battle. For tournaments however, it's whip the fish fast and get it in the net...now! The 8'3" are great for fun fishing.

I have some Light Action Ugly sticks thay make great light tackle setups but you aint reefing in any big fish with it - but it does make for a real fun fight.

My downrigger rods are BWC 1120 / 7 footers, they have the strenght to handle 20# fish and they can steer a fish if need be, tried lighter rods but like the power of the sticks. As I fish alone most of the time, I don't want some wimpy rod.

I am the odd ball here. I use the ugly stick CAL1100 ML 7'6" one piece rods. I actually think they are bass rods, but i really like them for riggers. just about the right amount of everything. long enough, but not too long, soft enough not to pop the releases and tough enough to handle the biggest fish I catch. any upgrade will be to the shimano talora's likely. Not fished with them yet, but they feel good in the store. The old ugly sticks are hanging tough. I really like the Talora diver rods and core rods. the core rods are too short except for off the corners and down the chute though.

I've been running the 7 foot 1pc cal1100 Med action mostly for pulling boards for Walleye, but have taken a few salmon to 15 pounds off the riggers. I like them, but will be trying the 7'6" 1pc cal1100 this summer, the fish are running small up here in Lake Huron, and would like to lighten up my equipment a bit

the first rods i got for riggers were the 8'3" uglies. i still use them, but now as swr rigs. my go to rigger rods are 7 foot uglies with 20 and 12 lb test lines. both have netted 20lb fish. stiffer rod for tournaments...maybe. will i? probably not. i love em ken lyles blucrop

I have 2 light action 1 piece ugly sticks I use for rigger rods and I love them. I use them all the time, they really load up nice the one piece makes them nice and even all the way down.
