I’ve got a couple of Daiwa Sealine 47SH reels I need to find a use for, capacity 20lb. 280yds. -- 25lb. 220yds.
I’ve heard of people running 5 colors of lead with a Daiwa SGA47LC, was mentioned on page 45 in the latest issue of GLA, Mark Romanack’s column. Has anyone done this and if so, how much 20-pound line can you get on a reel before putting on the core? Enough capacity overall?

I’ve already got 2 full core setups so if it works, will this be a worthwhile addition to the arsenal? Or should I find another use for these reels.

Thanks,
Dave

I use the 47SH for five colors of core but I don't use mono backing, I use 30# Power Pro. I don't recall offhand how much Power Pro but I'd guess 250-300 yards. I've even used the reel for 10 colors with Power Pro backing. I didn't get spooled from lack of backing but I was always afraid I would so I bought some bigger reels for the full core and used the 47SH for a half core. The high speed retrieve really comes in handy.

I hope somebody will have a more specific answer for the amount of backing but if not, don't fret. If you miscalculate and spool on too much it really isn't that big of a chore to hand wind the five colors back on the spool it came on so you can make changes to your backing.

I use my 47 for 5 colors with 20# mono backing. I use .45mm 20# and spool 400' on the counter, so i dont really know how much is on there. Then 5 colors of 27# cortland kerplunk and about a 20' mono leader. It fits nicely, but my spools dont always seem to spool evenly. So the starboard side of the reel is a little thicker than the port side and the last few cranks hit the levelwind on the spool, but it still works. I keep hoping it will even itself out while i use it. Good Luck.

I also use the 47 for 5 colors and use 30# Fireline as the backer. I don't recall exactly how much backer is on there though.

This is what I got on my Penn 320's for 5 Colors:
Penn 320GTI
˝ Core
500’ of .013 Braided line ( 50lbs test)
100’ 20lbs Mono leader
Full Cores:
Penn 330GTI
Full Core
600’ of .013 Braided line ( 50lbs test)
70’ 20lbs Mono Leader
Check the reel Capacity of the Penn to the 47 and adjust accordingly.
Hope this Helps.

Dave,if you have 2 of the reels spool the first one backwards,ie leader first then 5 colors then the backing and keep track of how much you put on to fill the first one properly.A kindly Salmonhead shared his chart for filling his tekotas with varying amounts of leadcore,he keeps track by counting the cranks of the reel if I remember correct. So if you did the first one and kept track after you emptyed the first one onto another so that it is on the reel the right way all you would have to do is count them onto the next reel.

There you guys go, thinking all logical and stuff. BTW, if any is interested, for a SWR rig on the Daiwa Sealine 47SH you can get 250 yards of 20 pound Ande, your two colors or core, and then still have room for pretty much any leader you’d like. Now I just gotta get these half cores going and I should be just about ready, that and buy a new truck to pull the boat. Details, details.

Thanks all,
Dave
