I picked up a couple of new Okuma CN-30 convectors over the winter...
using them for dipsey reels but, it seems the drags are binding???

Is this a simple adjustment ? I only notice it when I let the line out...
I have to turn the handle to get it to go out at times.
Not smoooth letting out line.

???
Thanks
-Alan

We have a couple of the CN linecounters and have never experienced any problem like that. The drags are very consistent. The one thing I did notice about them is that when you reel, the handle will engage the release. Depending on the position of the handle it will not allow you release the bail very well and sometime engages the bail. Otherwise I would either send them back or tear them apart. It goes pretty easy as I have changed the drags in some of my older Okumas. If something does get in there it will cause the drag washers to stick. When our old ones got bad it looked like someone dumped salt water in the drags. 3 new drag washers and they were good to go.

I own a couple of the CV 30 D's,I've noticed when you first use them, the drags are very touchy, until they get worked in.

I've also noticed,it seems their shipped in the box with the star drag cranked down, could explain why the drag washers are a tad stiff?

my convectors drags have to be cranked down almost all the way to gain line on a fish. then backed off if the fish wants to run. They are smooth enough when letting out line though
relegated to core reels

Allen,
If your reel is properly adjusted it should let out fine, while in free spool the small nob on the side (center of spool) should be adjusted to just hold the weight of a lure. This is used to control backlash, if over tightened it could act as you say. However your problem may not be a drag though it acts like one. There was a problem a couple of years ago where they recieved a batch of gears that are too wide. As the reel slips and heats up, the gears swell and jam up the reel. This was happening when the reels were engaged. Call Okuma at 1-800-GO OKUMA and ask for Mike at ext 151 or Ron at ext 135. I'm sure they could help you. The good news is that the new CV series has all these problems resolved and has also substantially upgraded the reels in the process.

tight lines,
