Changing the lower unit oil today I must have had the top screw in too tight because lower unit got pressurized enough to leak some oil out of the prop. Did I blow the prop seal or am I ok? The old oil was fine except for a small amount of emulsified water (it was slightly milky); not an amount that I would normally be concerned about after an entire season of use.

I'm kinda worried now because the next time I use my boat will be at LBDN and I don't want to be stuck up there with a bad seal.

Josh I don’t think with you could possibly put more than 15 lbs of pressure in the lower unit with a non commercial hand pump
I suspect you have a problem
The only way to tell for sure is to drain the lower unit of oil and use a commercial hand pump to pump the air pressure up to 15lbs
The lower unit seals should easily hold this
If not time to change some seals
Before you have internal damage

Yes, but wouldn't the hydraulic effect of the oil be different than air (which compresses)? I know if you overservice a car engine with oil you run the risk of blowing out the seals.

I guess what I will do is pull the prop off and make sure everything is clean behind it, then put it back together and run it on the hose and see if it leaks.

If the air leaks out the oil will do the same at the same pressure just slower
The reason we check it with air and not oil is we want to find out fast what needs to be done. With slow leaks you can use soapy water to find a leak
At the end of the day if the air leaks the oil will do the same at the same pressures the oil will just do it slower there really is no difference other than the time

OK thanks Frank. Very good insight as usual. I wish you were closer so I could bring in this 10hp Johnson that acted up on me today.
