is it difficult to pull the engine on a vovlo penta drive this boat happens to be an 86 21' bayliner trophy. id like to change out the oil pump, it appears to have low pressure at an idle 10-15 lbs

Actually a Volvo set up is rather easy to remove (compared to a merc lets say) the rear section or adapter housing is sealed in to the transom bracket by a large rubber o ring no alignment needed . You pull the upper gear box from the rear and remove 5 or so bolts that hold the o ring in its flange then back inside the 4 bolts that go into the floor then obviously the wires fuel line ect and its ready to lift
But to think changing the oil pump will fix the oil pressure problem is not likely . oil pressure is more reliant on tolerance between moving parts than the condition of the oil pump itself . oil viscosity idle rpms also have a direct and immediate effect as well .
First thing is to make sure you have the rite oil in motor and second is to check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge at the motor under the distributor AT THE STATED ENGINE IDLE RPM
For example if you have a engine that is idling at 50 rpms lower than the factory setting expect the idle oil pressure to be between 5 and 10 lbs lower than the factory spec

thanks, in the spring before i do anything i had planned on putting mechanical gauge and chaninging the oil and see what it reads. the oil looked a little worn. if i remember correctly it had about 50-60 lbs at about 1700-1900 rpms but i'd have to double check.

My 5.7 shows 10- 15 on the gauge all day long trolling no concerns here. Not a single tick to worry me the low PSI warning that GM used for decades was set at 7 PSI. I bet if you installed a oil cooler you would see a nice gain in PSI at idle I started running my bildge blower when trolling and the oil PSI came up some I have a power steering cooler from a old project that I am thinking about using to cool my oil. Since I have a remote filter it will be easy to add it.
Good Luck

Being a automotive tech I would say 10 -15 psi at idle is very well within specs. I wouldn't touch it.

One other thing to remember is most marine oil pumps are high volume not high psi. High oil pressure is not a good thing high oil volume is a good thing. 1970's and some 80's GM small blocks had a lot of camshaft issues nearly everone has heard them ticking away at idle even so they ran forever just slowly lost power as the lobes wore off. Bad oil psi will cause noise in the valve train almost imeadiatly as those parts are under more load than any other componet and get oiled last in the system other than parts that get their lube from the oil return. I would be most concerned by oil temp during long periods of idle but honestly if it and clattering away like granny's old sewing machine at idle ther is most likely nothing wrong.

I second what Frank said, check to make sure you have the correct viscosity oil in the engine and second I'd install a mecahnical oil pressure gauge and recheck the pressure. I wouldn't be to concerned about 10 to 15 psi at idle speeds, as Jim said some of the G.M. specs actually called for something down to about 7 psi as OK.I have a bored and stroked small block (388) in a Bayliner Cierra Sun Bridge and it runs at approx. 20 psi when warm and trolling and up to approx. 40 psi at cruise speeds. If it isn't making any kind of noise and you have the correct oil in the engine, I wouldn't lose much sleep over it.
