Anyone have an opinion on a 2004 Evinrude Direct Injection 225 ob? I'm looking at a boat, and the seller's description of the motor is

upgraded version of the older (and not as popular) FICHT technology. Way improved once BRP got their hands on it!

The earlier responses to my Ficht question made me nervous about Evinrudes from this time frame. Should I be as concerned with this motor?

Also, if the motor is good - are normal maintenance problems in line price wise with other brands? Are parts easily available?

I'm not a motor guy, so could be buying the Brooklyn Bridge for all I know.

Thanks all.

Here's what I can offer.....

I bought a new, leftover boat this year that had
a new 2005 Evinrude 225 on her. Did loads of research...including talking to a midwest dealer who
had no vested interest in the deal, as well as other
sources....

Bottom line was to avoid the late 90's early 2000
versions, but that the 03's and up were supposed to
be ok. Mine was great on gas this year, little bit
more smokey than I would have prefered.

Good luck.

John

not as bad as the fitch motors not as good as the etech
lot of good bargains on these motors most where great motors
i have had a bunch of them and good luck with most of them
they are a little hard on spark plugs and if you run the engine tuner through them like they tell you to do you can expect to have at least as long a life as any other two stroke
The ones that had the greatest problems with them are the early 150s and 175 other than that guys that trolled with them also had more of their share of problems
parts are redily available but costly and it takes a guy that has had some extensive training to able to effectively keep them running rite
more so than any thing else you need a good omc/fitch guy to work on them NO ONE else . some one with limited training on these motors often do more damage than good when it comes to service
my two pennies if that helps

Thanks for the replies. If my seller moves a little on the price, it sounds as though the deal may be do-able.
