Three of us took off from Sterling state park about 2:00 p.m. The forecast was for sunshine but we had dark gloomy skies and an awful flat lake. It was: Little Dandy, a guest and former coworker of mine, Ernie the big "E" Koch and myself aboard cantgetenough.
We thought the recent spate of cooler weather would bring some of the walleyes in closer to shore. We checked several good spots that usually hold the target species but marked very little. We ended up back out N. of W. Sister island where Mike and I have been Hammerin' them for the last month. We marked enough fish to get our attention.
After 2 hours of trollin' dips and spoons we had only 2 throwbacks to show for our trouble. The fish seemed to have lockjaw. My 26 yr. old son called from Ortonville and wanted to know how we were doing in the rain! We had no rain. In fact we were now getting some breaks in the overcast sky and some sun peeking thru. We didn't get any of the 2 hour rain that fell to the north over the Detroit area. We had an extremely calm lake. Tom, my son, sometimes captains both of my boats; the smaller Can't get Enough II and the one we were on, Can't get Enough III.
We also caught our first good fish. A Kiss song just happened to be playing on the radio (It was Rock and Roll all nite and party every day!) and soon after Little Dandy wanted to know if I had any "Kiss" on the boat. I dug into the cabinet and through about 30 old cassettes and sure enough! We played the Kiss album "Rock and Roll over" over and over and over as we caught 11 more walleyes in the next 2 hours! The fish seemed to enjoy the music as much as we did!
We fished past dark until we couldn't see much anymore. Boy, was the hour long ride back to the launch dark! No moon.
We fished 28 ft of water about 85 feet back. Green slime and all of the other spoons were doing just fine again. 6 ft. leaders.
Big "E", who turned 78 this year caught a 5 - 6 pounder and the smallest fish we boated was 3 lbs. No sheep, only one silver and 4 throwbacks. We also missed about 5 hookups that were good releases but nothing there. All of the fish were biting very light. Most of the fish all came unhooked in the net.
Same spot, same lures, same depth, same fish. What a summer, eh Mike?
The Lake Michigan Salmon, the perch, the catfish, the bass, the lake Erie steelhead this year, remember the huge smallmouth off the boards while we were catching walleye?!?! THE WALLEYE !!!!! Handlining, how many limits? I count close to a couple dozen in my boats. How many limits did you get Mike? What a summer, eh Mike?
It's been 33 great years of friendship and 30 great years of fishing Lake Erie walleyes at their finest, eh Mike? What memories. Priceless.
Time to winterize.
Next up: More perch fishing in the Can't get Enough II, Deer hunting and then ice fishing in Highland township for Slab Crappies thru the ice. Nothing like slabs thru the ice! Yum!!!!!
I LOVE the outdoors in MICHIGAN!!!!!!
