On Friday we did alot of searching. Started at the 27/27 line trying to mark fish but didn't see anything that looked all that good on the Raymarine so we headed due north from that area. We started to mark really good fish at the 32/26 line so we set up shop. Trolled around for 2 hours with not a single fish to show for it. We pulled 1 oz inlines the upper part of the water column (50 back) and ran 8oz bouncers 60 - 75 back to cover the bottom half of the column. Also ran a few cranks with three ways, but they never went for us.

We then got a report from one of our fishing partners that he was marking good and had pulled a few fish around the 31/18 line so we picked up headed into that area. Once again we had some decent marks and Pirate Clipper was in the area and had 6 so we shut it down and sent the gear out again. Pulled our first eye on a 1oz inline 80 back with a Huckleberry #5 Indiana Blade as soon as we came up on the 38ft hump. We then proceeded to go on a white bass run with the next 5 or so fish coming on cranks but all the wrong species. We then pointed our nose east and pulled one more eye for the day on an 8 oz bouncer with a #5 Indiana Anti Freeze blade.

On Sat we figured we would head back a little south of where we ended the day on Friday. Set up lines and marked fish right away. Pulled only spinner program for the first 2 hours and had only a few white bass to show for it so we switched up to three ways and didn't do any better. By now it was 11:30 and we knew we had to change something. During prefishing we had reports of good marks coming from the elbow area so we packed it in a made the run. Slowed down a few times along the way to see if anything would mark but nothing looked all that good. Finally set down around the 39/23 line with solid marks and trolled due east. We were still pulling 3 ways trying to cover water. At 1:00 we switched back to spinners and had our first fish on at 1:05. We then just stayed headed east and had our second fish on at 1:30, a nice 5lbr. We then just continued to work that single pod of fish, never going more 3/4's of a mile away from it in either direction. Our final bag consisted of two fish that we almost identical 9lbers, an 8, the 5lbr and a 4.5lbr. Every fish came on an 8 oz bouncer with a spinner. The best blade was Anti Freeze with the next best set up being a double Chicken Wing willow blade combo with copper beads. Both pulled 9lbers for us and both kept us busy with removing junk fish. Speed was 1.4 to 1.6. We went through 70 worms and by the end of the day we were pulling used worms off of inlines and putting them on the bouncers because we were out.

Spooman, thanks for the info on Friday. How did you end up, both healthwise and in the event?

JD

Great job by Jerry and his Reel Naughty crew in winning the 2008 Vermilion Hawgfest. There were 105 teams registered for the event and the Reel Naughty crew won it all.

The Lady Bridge team struggled to catch fish. We ended with only 3 fish at 15.75 pounds and 42nd place. We gave up on the worm bite and switched to spoons with dipseys.

It was a very fun event even with our poor finish.
