This thread discusses the Content article: Licenses: Let those who use the DNR pay

As a resident of Ohio...I do my part in supporting the MI economy....heck, I'm not quite sure why I even purchase OH licenses and tags...

And in working part-time at Monroe Comm. College, I pay some income taxes as well.

Here's what I buy each year in MI...

Non-resident small game
Non-resident duck stamp
Non-resident fish all species
Non-resident turkey tag

That all adds up to a couple hundred bucks worth of licenses, so if they raise it a bit, I won't care...

Lots to do in MI....you guys are lucky!

If they need to raise fees in order to provide quality game management, then I'm all for it. When all is said and done, we spend way more getting ready to hunt and fish than we do on the liscenses that permit it.

As a Hoosier, I too purchase non-resident licenses in both Michigan and Illinois. As long as the fees are going to support fishing or hunting I'm all for raising the costs. But, I fear the monies may be used for other state activities. And that I don't like!

LIke many state agencies, the DNR has been hard-hit by the general state budget crunch. Historically, Michigan has pretty good about allocating DNR revenue to DNR budgets. No guarantee that will continue in the future of course...we all know how politicians are with a cookie jar full of cash.

Sore subject....until there are policies in place that protect that money,I'm not in favor. I was at one time but when the politicians started using DNR money in other places (pay taxes) my opinion changed. Put a policy in place that protects it and I'll pay $100.00 a license. Until then...no dice.

agreed. I dont know how things work exactly, but if the extra money is going to the general fund or something, no go. But if that money is guarnteed to stay in the DNR, then I am all for it.

I thought that Governor Granholm had signed a bill or executive order protecting the fees from fishing and hunting licenses from being put in the General Fund. It seems like it was year or more ago ... I guess I must have hullicinated it.

I knew I wasn't dreaming ... this is not to say that the state wont take all of the general fund money that was budgeted to the DNR - read this

I wondered how they got their hands on the 7 or 8 million that was in there then....must have been a loophole somewhere...
