Kyle, I don't know if you remember but I have a special mate and believe it or not it fits all my spoons.
I does take up a bunch of space however.
I really like the way it works though and I guess I'll keep it.

I use the clear plano style boxes. I prefer the deeper ones as well. Couple reasons why. I need to fit my boxes into a tackle center or else they are in the cabin and I dont want to go down there when its choppy and they are more accessible when in the tackle centers. I like the special mates, but they dont fit in my tackle ceters. I can fit 14 regualr depths clear plastic boxes in there. I also like them for the raw ability to jam pack them with hundreds of spoons each. I have also switched to the clear spin doctor cases as well, so they also fit in the tackle center. Our last boat had a small center console on it and the special mate was a perfect fit and the plano style were all over the place, but this boat the plano style is the best solution for me.

I use a mixture of Special Mate boxes and plano boxes to store my spoons. The majority of baits that I do not use every day are in 3 special mates which fit perfectly beneath the overhang of the transom. I keep my a dozen of my "go to" patterns in one plano box in some more accessable storage, then I have two empty plano boxes at the beginning of the day or week (for tournaments) which I file my hot baits and also the baits we use without success.
