I use to live in Port Huron and still love to walleye fish up there. It starts with when do you want to fish. The end of April through the middle of May I catch most of my fish whipping or chugging at night with pencil plugs and rapalas. June through September I catch them drifting with crawler harnesses out at the mouth of the river north of the bridge at night again. If I can help you anymore let me know. Good luck Roy Bishop Jr.

Roy,

Would you care to elaborate on the techniques known as "whipping and chugging?" Thanks...and welcome to the board.

Whipping or chugging is a very good way to catch big walleyes. Lets start with a location first. The St. Clair River is full of holes in shallow water(6 to 20 feet deep) and most of them hold walleyes. It also has a swift current. You anchor your boat about 50 to 150 feet upstream from the hole. You can tell good holes because they will have boats there 3 to 4 hours before dark but there are a lot of holes that dont get fished because people dont know about them. Ok for the setup. First you need a short heavy rod( 3 to 6 feet long most local tackle shop have them) with a small trolling reel spooled with 25 to 30 # test line I like to use Proline. You attach your main line to a 3 way swivel. You have a 16 inch dropper line to a 1 oz sinker. Then you need a 3 foot leader to your bait. Some people will attach a second leader to the back of the first lure to use two lures(piggyback). You then drop the setup in the water and let it back until you hit bottom. The current will pull you lures downstream towards the hole. When you hit bottom pull your rod upstream then let it back you should hit bottom again if not let more line out. Continue to do this until you work through the hole then SLOWLY reel everything back in and repeat. Most fish will hit either when you jerk forward or right when your sinker hits bottom when letting it back. You might think that your sinker just bounced twice but that second thump was most likely a fish. If you have anymore questions just let me know. I have been fishing the river for 20 years now and have a few secret honey holes that I might give out but not all of them.

Let me know when you are planning on going and I will meet you up there. I love to catch walleyes and would never turn down a trip. I can bring up my boat or yours. Or if you have someone else I can fish near you and just talk you through it. There is a very good chance that you will catch a double digit walleye I always release them after a few pictures of course just to make sure we have walleyes to catch in the future. Depending on where you are coming from you may want to stay up there for a night or two. I have had nights where I have caught my 6 walleyes in under a hour. If I can find a map of the river I will try to post it with some holes outlined.

I guess a lot will depend on the weather. I am not sure when they put in the ramps. I was thinking around first of April? We can use my boat, I have most of everything needed as far a lures, walleye rigs, bottom bouncers, fish seekers, planner boards, Will be just the two of us so I can see how it is done. Let me know the dates that will work for you then I will get back with you. I live about 50 miles from Port Huron so I can be their any time you are ready
