Trolling rigs Lake Superior/Michigan side

Planning on fishing the Michigan side of Superior out of Saxon Harbor this spring, and have heard of "meatlines". As I've only fished the Wisconsin side, I know very little of Michigan regulations. As I understand, you can have three lines with up to six hooks each while trolling. What are the tried and true rigs for running these systems?

technically, Michigan regulations while trolling for salmon and trout on the great lakes is 3 lines per person with up to two hooks per line for a total of 6. I think that is what you meant, but just making sure. Not a lot of fishing pressure on Lake Superior, so it might be difficult getting info up there. The couple times I have been there, we ran to Stannard Rock out of Big Bay and jigged for lakers. We did some trolling and tried peanuts behind cowbells with limited success. Our spoons worked better and had a few hits on large chrome quickfish with pink dots as the stacker over and behind the cowbells. Good luck.

I re-read the regulations, and found the two hooks per line to be correct. You're correct about the fishing pressure for the Saxon Harbor area. Lots of info for the Apostle Islands/Chequamegon Bay on GLA, but the Michigan boys are pretty tight-lippped about their presentations.....

When speaking of "meatlines" are you talking about running Cut-bait and Whole-bait rigs or something different?

I did a little more research, and from what I gather, a "meatline" is actually a single line with many hooks for catching smelt. Mich reg's allow for this in areas "frequented by smelt". In converstation with a Mich area Charter Captain, I made an incorrect assumption you could use that approach for salmon/trout with mutltiple lures.

Smelt are the only fish I can think of that allows more than two hooks/ lures per line. I have used that method on Crystal lake near Traverse City through the ice and it works well. Kind of cool catching smelt on hook and line and when you get 3-4 on at a time, they actually fight.
