Hit the river at the same spot I've been fishing at about 4:30 yesterday. River had come down a bit, but the fish still cooperated. I had my 4 fish by 5:15pm or so, and continued fishing until 6:15pm, catching another dozen or so.

All jacks again, ranging from 18-22". 2003 year class fish for sure. DNR showed up and ticketed the guy standing next to me for keeping fish hooked in the mouth, but from the outside-in. This is a big controversy right now between the fisherman and the DNR.

Felt bad for the guy..DNR were wearing ghillie suits and hiding in the brush using spotting scopes. That ticket will likely be in excess of $600.00.

So what you putting in the water to catch these fish - is it an artificial presentation or live bait?

Oops...sorry G!!

Carolina rig w/ 1oz egg sinker above a small bead, then barrel swivel, then 4' leader back to a #2 floating jig head (orange has been good) and 3" grub tail (chartreuse metal flake). Long leaders have been good this year.

I use Spiderwire Fusion (6# test, 10# diameter) for my mainline and 10# Vanish fluoro for my leaders.

that gives new meaning to "Waitin' in the weeds". Holy crap, that is really getting to be a sticky point on if the hook of the lure went outside into the mouth or inside out of the mouth. the fish tried to eat it one way or the other. Sucks getting that ticket for sure.

Inside of mouth or outside can be due to the fishing technique too. I know that there are a group of guys that fish at 6th Street dam in GR on the east side of the river that basically "line" steelhead all of the time. They run their lines through the chute and wait for the resistance of a fish and set the hook. From what I have seen, 80% plus of the steelies they catch are hooked on the outside of the mouth.

Ryan,

We call that situation you described "flossing" the fish. I see guys doing it all the time.

I spoke to 3 ODNR Wildlife guys last night (not CO's) and each of them said that they thought it was very nit-picky of the CO's to write that guy up.

I'm calling the regional CO today and getting the scoop on the legality of that issue, then also the culling issue.
