Went out solo yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon. Beautiful day on the water. Fish didn't cooperate. Tried blades/jigs for a brief time but the wind died to nothing so there was no drift. Decided to troll with inlines and ripsticks. Nothing. Water was clear to slightly stained. Ran out to the dumping grounds and didn't mark anything. Only place I found with good marks was in front of the 3 stacks in 11-12 ft of water. No go. Seems like fish aren't in their usual spots for this time of year. I've been out twice and the area around Turtle Island has been dead. very few boats and no action. Anybody got any ideas about what's going on this spring? I read the reel naughty post about last Saturday, but other than that it seems like it's been pretty slow. Does the weather just need to stabilize for a few days?

Ricky,

I think the weather for the past two weeks has really screwed things up...and the fish are there, they just have their noses in the mud.

Rumor has it that the Lighthouse area has produced some good catches as of late.

Hope that helps,

BFG

Thanks BFG....I'm going to hit it hard this Friday thru Sunday. Hopefully things will come around by then.

BFG is probably right on. That was quite a blow that went through over the weekend. That said, crankbaits running far enough back to tickle the bottom can produce this time of year. I've had pretty good luck in April with Thunderstick Jrs in gold/orange early & late in the day, in years past. I was working on the boat Tuesday and will be fishing this weekend too.

I have also had good luck with rattling cranks with large signatures (i.e. Thin Fins, Rattle Traps, jointed Rapalas/Bombers, etc.).

Louder colors the better...and if you aren't picking up zebra mussels, you aren't fishing where the fish are, which means constantly checking lines (which can be a good thing anyway).

Reds/Fire Tigers/Chartreuse/Hot Pink/Bubble Gum have all been good for me in the past, although there is a strong contingency of fisherman that live and die by Chrome/blue and Chrome/black cranks this time of year. The 800-size Reef Runners really shine from April to mid-May.

I'm still anxiously awaiting my first soft-water Erie trip of the year. Hopefully I'll get out there soon.
