Anyone ever use wooden planer boards, the large kind for use with a planer mast? I hear they work better but I am not sure.

I run big wood boards all the time on Lake Erie.

Are you asking if big boards are better than the plastic inline boards or are the wood boards better than the plastic ones you can buy already made?

Both the inlines and big wood boards have their place. Whether or not a homemade wood set of boards is 'better' than a pre-made purchased set is something you have to decide for yourself.

The vast majority of the charter operators in my area (Monroe, MI) are running wood boards. They don't have issues with storage space a smaller boat would have. They do require durability and the performance to tow 4,5,6 lines off each side.

Two guys fishing an 18' aluminum boat would probably be better served running 4 in-line setups. Four guys on the same boat, probably a mast/ski setup.

See this article for a little info on running the big wood boards.

The link you reference does not seem to work, is there an error on the link?

BTW, I am going to have 4 persons in the boat. Also thanks for the great feedback.

The boat is a 21 foot Sylvan with 4.3 L V6 and kicker motor setup.

Yes, I am looking at comparing plastic to wood. Is there anyone who makes the wood board for sale? I am not the expert carpenter type.

Sorry about the link, it seems to work for me(?). Under EA Issues, in the March 2007 edition, I did an article on Big Board Basics.

http://www.amishoutfitters.com/access.htm makes the boards in wood & new synthetic wood that is supposed to be the ultimate.

Planer board plans can be found online, just google it. If you have a buddy who has a power saw, they aren't difficult.

i prefer wood borads over plastic....cedar to be exact...the plastic does not seem to pull as hard...even with the water keels you can use..

just like LD said, google plans online...thats all i did about 6 years ago and made my own...very easy...hardest thing is to cut the edge for the board to pull to the port or starboard, which is not hard at all if you have a saw...very easy...and mine are not that big...28 inches total, from the offset...and they pull 5 lines of either jet 40s or reef runners all day long....

i spray painted mine orange and put a clear coat on em...some guys say to leave them go without paint...let the cedar soak the water in...then they will pull harder in the water....its a dodge vs. ford battle...too each its own....

you got time to get em done...

we will hopefully be out on the big lake next weekend, i will let ya know how the boards pull this season!!!
