This thread discusses the Content article: Cormorants pose big problems on lakes, islands

I've seen cormorants diving and feeding while we were perch fishing....and it's unnerving how much those birds can consume in a short period of time.

You can see the bright white covered shoreline of West Sister from a long way away. Covered in Cormorant guano....and poisoning the island.

Something needs to be done at a more accelerated rate...these things are out of control.

My vote would be to let the duck hunters have a chance. We have all the equipment necessary...and access around Erie is abundant. Heck, we'll even shoot them with non-toxic shot...

Wish it was the easy but it isn't. Pete Butchko, USDA-Wildlife Services will be disussing Cormorant Control in the Great Lakes at our Spring Show March 4th at 12:00pm. Pete'e been in charge of this for the past several years.

Keep in mind that the PETA organizations and some wildlife groups are opposing Cormorant Control. Trying to combat those big money organizations isn't an easy task. When our groups start screaming about shooting birds, crushing eggs or some other lethal method, these pro-cormorant groups start rallying and it makes it that much tougher around here and we all lose. Hence it's referred to as "Cormorant Control"

One of the first things people can do is get educated on just what this bird is capable of and then attend the Seminar in March. Find out what is currently being done and the plans that are in place. We need alot of help and common thinking amoung us as Sportsmen.

Some folks have been dealing with cormorant devistation for the past several years and are making some big progress. Huge steps forward have been made in this year alone. The thing that would really hurt us now are delays brought on by the pro-groups.

Greg- how about a link to the DNR Report on Cormorants? The one I have posted on the Flint Site. Some folks may not have read it yet.

I can tell you that we have had a big problem with them on Drummond Island and the Cederville area for years. The DNR and Wildlife has let us undertake a small management program and I can tell you that it really seams to be working the perch population is slow starting to recover. We use to see flocks of 200 to 500 birds and that is now not so common. I hope that they will use our test program as a model for the rest of the lakes.
