Coast Guard releases water level data for Great Lakes PDF

Low water levels continue on Lake Superior, the U.S. Coast Guard reported Wednesday in its forecast for May. As of May 5, Lake Superior is expected to be a foot below “chart datum” - a plane of reference used on navigation charts - while water levels on Lake Huron-Michigan are expected to be near normal. The two lakes are connected and in a hydrological sense are a single body of water.

Water levels are relatively high on the lowers. Lake St. Clair is 25 inches above chart datum, while Lake Erie and Lake Ontario are both about 32 inches above normal.

The head of the St. Clair River at the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse is two inches above chart datum, while levels are six inches above normal at the bridges. Water levels contine to rise downstream. Projections call for the river to be 13 inches above chart datum at St. Clair, 20 inches at Algonac and 25 inches at the mouth of the river at St. Clair Flats.

Also, the Coast Guard reports possible shoaling in the St. Clair River just north of Russell Island shoal lighted buoy IR (LLNR 9745). Mariners are advised to use caution while transiting the area.
