The majority of the salmon have been in the 12-18 pound class, but a few in excess of the 25-pound mark also have been weighed.

In fact, the largest salmon weighed in Michigan this year was the 32-pound, 15-ounce wall-hanger taken off Grand Haven earlier in the week. The trophy salmon was caught by Tim Shick.

Earlier in the week, a fair number of chinook salmon came through the Muskegon Channel and were being taken by those trolling along the old sand docks. The water in Muskegon Lake is very warm, so many of the fish are moving quickly toward the river mouth.

Although the main salmon run is still a couple weeks away, enough fish have moved through the channel and into Muskegon Lake to make it interesting.

Muskegon River and White River anglers have been picking up a few salmon in the lower stretches as well. Large body baits and spoons are being used.

Some of the better off-shore trolling action is taking place during the two hours before daybreak as good numbers of king salmon are being taken near the breakwater arms and channel walls. Try using a glow J-Plug or one of the moonshine spoons. Once the sun comes up, the better fishing is taking place out in the 80-100 foot depths where lead-core line, downriggers and Dipsy Divers are being used with spoons and flasher-fly combos. Popular color patterns include watermelon, blue dolphin and lemon ice.

Walleye -- The action on Muskegon Lake has been fair this week due to a recent cold front. Better results were being reported from White Lake.

Pike --Improved catches of pike can be found on both Muskegon Lake and White Lake. Try drifting with a large minnow or trolling body baits along the outside edge of a weed bed.

Perch --There have been some nice yellow perch taken from White Lake in 8-15 feet of water. Minnows have been the best bait, but wax worms also work well.

Bluegill --Good bluegill fishing is being found on White Lake, and to a lesser extent, on Muskegon Lake. Try fishing with a perch rig (spinners and spikes) in 15-20 feet of water. The fish aren't always found close to bottom so you may have to come up several feet to locate the suspended fish. Some of the inland waters such as Blue Lake and Wolf Lake are also worth trying.

MSA contest -- The Muskegon Sportfishing Association will host its annual all-species fishing contest on Saturday out of Fisherman's Landing on Muskegon Lake. Three cash prizes will be awarded in each of the following categories: pike, walleye, trout-salmon, bass and the "potluck" category, which includes carp, catfish and sheepshead.
