The salmon run on the upper Muskegon River between Thornapple and Croton seems to be peaking as large numbers of spawning kings are being seen on the beds.
Good to excellent salmon fishing for bedding chinook also can be found on the White River between Taylor Bridge and Pines Point, north branch of the White River, Pere Marquette, Pentwater River below Oceana Drive and Cedar Creek below River Road. Try using a gold-ball size piece of skein under a large float, working a crankbait through the deeper pools, or drifting a streamer fly through the nesting areas. There have been numerous tickets issued by local conservation officers to the scofflaws taking foul-hooked salmon and it's a sure bet many more citations will be issued over the next couple weeks. If you observe the illegal taking of fish or game, call 1-800-292-7800. In addition to the salmon, a fair number of opportunistic steelhead also have moved up the White River, Muskegon River and Grand River where they have been holding just below the salmon redds. Spawn presentations have been working well. The bluegill fishing continues to be exceptionally good on Muskegon Lake, White Lake and Spring Lake as well as on the bayous of the lower Grand River. Limit (25) catches have been the rule rather than the exception. Top baits have been wax worms, spikes, jumbo red worms and pieces of a crawler. Look for some of the better bluegill fishing in 12-18 feet of water and don't always fish tight to the bottom as at this time of year these fish often suspend. Bluegills aren't the only panfish holding the attention of area anglers as, when the wind and wave conditions permit, good-excellent catches of Lake Michigan "white-belly" perch in the 9-12 inch class are being taken out of the 50-65 foot depths just south of the Grand Haven Channel. Minnows have been working well as has spikes, wigglers and walleyes. If, for the most part, you're just catching gobies ... pick up the anchor and try a different locale. Good catches of native yellow perch are also being taken out of Muskegon Lake. Try fishing tight to the weeds in 10-12 feet out from Snug Harbor, between the Black Buoy and Bear Lake Channel or off Johnson's Point. A few steelhead are just starting to be taken from the surf (both Muskegon and Grand Haven), but the action has been inconsistent. Floater spawn bags using fresh spawn seems to be working best. The walleye action has picked up on Muskegon Lake as a growing number of fish coming through the channel are being taken on Hopkins (Lee's) Spoons during the morning and evening hours. Area hunters and anglers may want to put Oct. 30 on their calendar. From noon to 3 p.m., there will be a pig roast at Someplace Else on Apple Avenue as a benefit for the family of Joe Vanderstelt, the former owner of Dawn to Dusk. He is facing a life-threatening illness. Tickets will be available at the door. |
